The apartment initially looked vintage. But after living there, we saw that it was just old and not well maintained. The day before we moved in, she gave us a bag of floor protector pads and instructed us to put them on everything so as not to damage the hardwood floor; something she never mentioned prior to us signing the contract. The upstairs had a musty smell at first, which we figured was due to being closed up during the summer. Once in, I started having respiratory issues. We removed the carpeting and found areas with excessive water damage. She refused to have it checked by a mold specialist, and instead of having it remediated, she had the floors finished (by a company owned by her brother), effectively covering up the water damage. She would often call late evening (9-10pm) or early morning (6am) to tell us workers were coming within a few hours. And if they were coming at 9am, she would barge in at 8:45am without knocking. After we moved out, she provided us with detailed cleaning instructions, including what she considered the "problem areas," meaning she undoubtedly had entered the apartment to look around without asking permission or providing notice. At this point, we'll be surprised to get back the security deposit, figuring she'll come up with any excuse possible to not refund it.
