Tries to illegally retain security deposits.

Posted 5 years ago

Jeff Underwood owns multiple properties in Columbia, MD under multiple company names such as a JPC Associates LLC, Uncommon Realty, etc. He does the minimal amount to stay out of trouble with the county. He illegally attempts to retain security deposits and threatens to sue you in court for outrageous amounts in an attempt to get you to walk away from your security deposit. Do NOT be intimidated. If you rent from him, document everything. Utilize emails and retain them to use as evidence when you move. Take pictures of the rental property as soon as possible when you start renting and the day you move out as proof of the condition you left the property in. In 10 years, Mr. Underwood never painted or re-carpeted. When issues occurred, he did the minimal amount to resolve issues including after a pipe burst, refusing to clean and/or remove carpeting resulting in mold growth or failing to repair the ceiling after water damage resulting in a chandelier falling in the formal dining room. He had his handyman drill holes in the ceiling to release the water in the ceiling but never repaired the ceiling and left the holes and stains on the ceiling. He attempts to change word meanings in his leases such as stating in his leases that ‘normal wear and tear’ shall mean the condition of the property as on the first day of the lease. Get a lawyer and sue him, if necessary, to get your security deposits back (as well as pay for your attorney fees.)
