RUN! If you appreciate your sanity, time and money DO NOT RENT FROM THESE PEOPLE! Darrell and Lisa Darrow should be barred from ever owning rental properties.. Within a week of moving into one of their properties they were already harassing our family to the point that we had to involve the police and have a restraining order put in place. Within a month of living in one of their properties they had come into our home to do 3 inspections. They will harass you, stalk you, and invade your privacy
These people are scam artists beware! Do not let them fool you with the fresh paint and fake smiles they are out to get every dime they can from you and for nothing. I would NEVER let them fool you into on of their properties after reading the horror stories that a lot of other people had with these crazy people. Why I didn’t research online before is my own fault so if you’re reading this you’re doing yourself a justice knowing to run far away from these evil people.
The worst Landlords in Norfolk. They took us to court and had there daughter lie for them. She had to be removed from the room because of disturbances. The judge ended up letting them keep our deposit because we did not photo document the "damage" before we moved in. When I say "Damage" I mean there was dirt on the outside of the house and the front door paint was scuffed. Stay far away from these people, they are the worst of the worst. The amount of "BS" that you will deal with is not worth it. RUN AWAY!!!!
The fact that Lisa has the nerve to include full names of people who have lived in their properties is ridiculous. The only reason you’re able to afford the “luxurious” Chesapeake home that you have is because you scam college kids. They need to be arrested for all of the illegal acts that have been committed. Oh wait.....Lisa has been arrested before. RUNNNNN RUN far from this place.
Lisa and Darrell mentioned in last post to the 3 girls that "during our 15 year ownership, this property has never flooded. Our children lived in this property for many years." So yes, I did live on the property, because they were my parents (yes I am a child of Darrell and Lisa). But that property did flood, almost every time it rained really hard. So clearly Darrell and Lisa are definitely mistaken. Then Lisa and Darrell mentioned in the last post that " Impossible, as we are senior citizens, with a successful busy engineering company, (which requires much travel), a second out-of-state home, belong to several very active personal bus travel clubs, have five children, grandchildren, etc." First of all I am not a child, I am a grown adult. And every single one of their other "children" are adults who they have kicked out of the family, moved out and/or never wanted to establish contact with them after many crazy and erratic episodes. So these people are not busy visiting their "children" because we do not want to be visited by them. And grandchildren? Lisa and Darrell refuse to even see their grandchild. Included many of my friends rented from them as well and had to go to court just to try to get their security deposits back. And Lisa and Darrell will take you to court and try to take everything from you when they lie on the stand. So do not believe what they tell you. Yes their places are always nice but it comes with a cost - your security deposit and sanity.
We cleaned and cleaned and cleaned for 2 weeks - even brought in friends and family members- scrubbed air vents, behind the fridge, under (yes UNDER) the stove/oven, vacuumed the part of the basement that our lease specifically said we were not allowed to use ourselves, cleaned the inside of the washing machine, scrubbed tiles, wiped down everything from the top of the ceiling fans to the baseboards, bleached and scrubbed everything imaginable in the bathroom and STILL they deemed it necessary to hire a professional cleaner to come in behind us because "the house was in no way the same condition we received it in." Then - days after our walkthrough - they called trying to get us to do maintenance which we had requested for months ago. That's just our experience moving out. Living there was terrible. Because of the constant flooding in Norfolk, their grass wasn't growing well, especially where they would weed whack it away 3" from any concrete. They filled these bald spots with sand (not sure the thought process there), blamed us for not keeping our tires on the driveway, and even threatened to charge us $50 if they had to repeat the process. They're there 70% of the time doing maintenance on their other properties which they don't notify you about. Occasionally we'd receive an email at midnight stating they would be coming into the property in the morning for one reason or another - WHICH IS ILLEGAL. Lessors must give their tenants a full 24 hour notice before entering a property. There's a clause in the lease that gave them the right to enter the property without notifying tenants if no one would be there in a span of 5 days or longer. They always assumed we would be gone during holiday breaks even after we reminded them that this was our one and only home several times. We really only stayed because the property was cute and in a good location. I would not recommend anyone rent from these people.
Only rent from the Darrow's if you are comfortable with: -interacting with your landlords on a frequent basis -giving them your parent's social security numbers -having them inspect your HVAC filters monthly (this entails buying two filters per month and replacing them yourself) -not allowing friends or family to park in the driveway -getting your car blocked in weekly when they come to mow the lawn -overlooking a junkyard (853 44th street property) -being one of the only residential houses on an industrial block -paying $75 outside of your security deposit to clean the narrow strip of (fugly) carpeting on the stairs -barely having an counter space/storage space -hearing that you've done an extremely good job of maintaining the house and then receiving less than a quarter of your security deposit back -condescending emails -feeling like an idiot for ignoring bad reviews online Lisa and Darrell haven't been able to rent the 853 44th street property since August of 2017. Let's keep it that way
Ask ANY of their tenants. These landlords are NOT worth the cute houses, they will only steal money from you. They are in lawsuits against many of their tenants, which should be enough to tell you to run. They should get their licenses taken away.
Don't let thier pre-rental cheer full you. As soon as you sign the lease these Dr. Jeckles turn into Mr & Mrs Hide. Also, don't expect normal wear and tear to be acceptable at the end of the lease. They'll rip off your security deposit and more.
They stated a dog was in our house and charged us $500. When we went to talk to them in person about it, Darrell had to hold Lisa back because she started screaming at us
I would reallyy highlyyyyyy recommend not living in a Darrow home. You will come to regret it. I have. And if you don't believe me just look them up on court case records. You will find yearssssss of them suing their tenants. It is really sad they have to make money by taking from those less fortunate. As a struggling student, they have managed to take THOUSANDS (and that isnt an exaggeration) of mine and my parents money. Please help me put these bad people out of business so they don't do this to anyone else. They are immoral and will not stop until they have your life's savings.
Just don't do it. If you have the chance to live in a Darrow home, JUST DONT DO IT! They may seem like sweet folk when you meet them, but pleaseeee do not let that fool you. You will get played. They are just greedy old people taking advantage of college students.
Towed friends car from our houses' private parking lot. Came by house without any warning. Gave key to maintenance man to allow access - without informing us, while we were all in class. Charged for wear and tear, Firearm batteries (which were not dead), paint to touch up a few small nicks along with labor, overcharged for carpet cleaning, charged for painting and cleaning after 2 year lease (after we had vacuumed, dusted, mopped, and spot painted the rooms). After paying $48,000 in rent over the two years, the landlords hammered us with fees of $1,800 in "cleaning and upkeep fees" upon move out - along with ruining relationships with other tenants on other properties during their rental time period.
