The landlord was decent enough while we lived there; I'd give him a solid B+ on making repairs. The reason I'm leaving a negative review is that he cheated us out of the security deposit when we moved out. I want to be clear I don't use that word lightly. His excuse was that we supposedly stained the downstairs carpet, but the real cause was that it mildewed due a leaky pipe he needed to fix. Also, in his explanation he claimed that the carpet was brand new when we moved in, which is quite simply a lie as he did not replace the carpet that had been in there the whole time he lived there when we moved in. Now I'm not saying that we deserved to get the entire deposit back. Perhaps we didn't. We spent a lot of time cleaning the place but didn't hire professionals (and given that he was determined to cheat us out of the deposit no matter what we did I'm quite glad of that). However, I don't like being cheated, and there's no other word for blaming us for damages that were his responsibility and simply lying about the state of the carpet when we moved in. The truth is that the carpet was about five years old and needed to be replaced anyway. If there were a reason to keep our security deposit then that's fine, but I resent being cheated out of money for repairs he needed to do anyway.
