I've always been the kind of person to act in good faith, take people for their word, and assume that things can be worked out later. This landlord has changed my mind. I will never sign another agreement without thoroughly reading the entire thing. I don't want to get into every little detail so these are just a few facts from my time renting from him.
I felt it necessary to hire a lawyer to defend myself against him (twice).
This was the only place that I have ever lived that kept any of my security deposit, and they kept the entire thing.
I found a nicer place for less rent and a shorter commute. When I gave 60 days notice of moving out, which was allowed in the lease "for any reason", his agent told me that my reason was "a really poor use of the policy".
He refused a certified letter that I sent him.
His agent showed the house when I requested that they show it another time. She said that she would show it whenever she wanted as long as she gave notice.
I would not recommend renting from Mr. Stern to anyone.
