This landlord is not communicative, rude, lies, will yell at you when you have a conflict and then beg you not to leave. He has tens of thousands of dollars in violations with the DOB due to an illegal basement apartment that he keeps renting out and, as a result, will tell you not to call the fire department for emergencies (like a gas leak - true story) because he doesn't want to accrue more fines. Basic amenities and utilities do not get fixed in a timely manner. He expects tenants to pay for plumbing issues and does everything else on the cheap, then blames the tenant if something goes wrong. Constantly puts the house on and off the market, which means you'll be getting regular texts/calls from realtors wanting to show your place to prospective buyers. (This started a MONTH into my lease and continued until I left). Despite all these issues (and many more I don't have the time to list), he will still try to raise your rent and get as much out of you as possible. He also leased the basement apartment to three women and then proceeded to ask one of them out because he's a "lonely man." His name is Alaa Tantawy but he goes by "Sam," likely because his daughter's name is Samantha and the deed to the house has suspiciously bounced back and forth between them throughout the years. The last tenant broke his lease early. The current tenants in the basement apartment are in a legal battle with him to get money back after the apartment was falsely advertised as legal. He will constantly threaten legal action and then not show up in court. Tenant turnover is very high for a reason. Just don't do it.
